Rear-end collision leaves 1 dead in Louisiana crash
Authorities say a woman died in a two-vehicle accident in St. Martin Parish after her car overturned in a ditch following a rear-end collision. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor; however, a state lab is conducting a toxicology analysis in an ongoing investigation. No charges were filed against the driver of the truck that rear-ended the woman’s car.
Police say that just before 9:00 p.m. on Nov. 23, a 2005 Mercury traveling west on Louisiana Highway 352 driven by a 54-year-old woman was struck in the rear by a 2007 Chevrolet truck driven by a 39-year-old man. The impact of the collision propelled the Mercury across the road’s eastbound lane and into a ditch where it overturned.
The woman, who reportedly was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was declared dead at the accident scene by the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office. Police say the driver of the truck, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries.
The loss of a loved one in a fatal auto accident may create both emotional and financial tolls on the surviving family. With that may come the unexpected costs of emergency assistance provided at the accident scene and subsequent payment for funeral and burial arrangements.
When the decedent is survived by minor children or dependent adults, concerns about their future economic well-being may be intensified. After the responsible party or parties have been identified, the family may opt to pursue a civil wrongful death action to recover the reasonable value of their losses occasioned by the decedent’s death.
