New rule may limit speed of large trucks
Drivers in Louisiana may be interested to learn that the government may soon impose limits on how fast large vehicles can travel. The new rule, which is being suggested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, would impact trucks and buses of more than 26,000 pounds. These vehicles would be required to have a device installed that prevents them from traveling over a certain speed. Regulators are still deciding whether to cap speeds at 60, 65, or 68 mph.
Advocates for the rule say that limiting speeds would help prevent crashes. Each year, more than 1,000 people die in auto accidents involving vehicles of this size. Many truck tires are not designed to exceed speeds of 75 mph, so the device could also help prevent blowouts. In addition, forcing large vehicles to travel more slowly could help decrease gas consumption.
Government agencies have been considering enforcing this kind of regulation since it was first proposed in 2006. Some truck drivers oppose the law, however, saying that it could actually lead to more accidents because it will force trucks to travel much more slowly than smaller vehicles. Speed limits are currently set by individual states. Many of the states with the highest limits are in the western part of the country.
