Multi-car collision kills Opelousas man
At 9:30 p.m. on March 27, an automobile accident occurred on U.S. Highway 190 that left one man dead and a number of other people injured. The Louisiana State Police stated that the accident happened near the intersection of 190 with Interstate 49 and involved three separate vehicles.
The police believe that a 1997 Mercury Tracer had been going north on the I-49 East frontage road when it encountered a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado going west on U.S. 190 with a 1997 Buick Park Avenue being towed behind it with a strap. The Buick was under the control of a driver in the vehicle. As the Tracer tried to go across 190 to get onto I-49 it went into the path of the Silverado, causing a collision.
The 47-year-old Opelousas woman driving the Tracer was seriously injured in the accident, and her 55-year-old male passenger was killed. The 18-year-old man driving the Silverado was also hurt, but he did not want medical treatment. Five of the passengers in the vehicle he drove were injured and had to be taken to the hospital to be treated. The 25-year-old driving the Buick was also hurt, as were two passengers in that car. The Louisiana police have issued a citation against the woman driving the Tracer for an alleged failure to yield.
