Female pedestrian killed in Louisiana parking lot crash
A Marrero woman died in a hospital on March 7 after an SUV crashed into her and her husband around noon as they walked through a private parking lot. The fatal crash happened along Louisiana Highway 45. Authorities were still investigating the cause at the time of the report.
State troopers say they believe a 52-year-old woman was behind the wheel of a SUV and heading north on the state highway when she lost control of the vehicle. The SUV went off the road, hit a sign and traveled into a parking lot, where the husband and wife were walking.
The SUV ran into both of the 24-year-olds, and they were taken to the Level 1 Trauma Center at the Interim LSU Hospital. The husband had moderate injuries, but the wife did not survive the injuries she suffered. Police said a toxicology exam of the driver was pending. Criminal charges against the woman were also to be determined pending further investigation.
Pedestrians are at the highest risk of suffering serious and fatal injuries in traffic incidents because they do not typically wear any protective clothing. They also do not have the advantage of air bags and other safety features like the occupants of vehicles.
