Fatal storm chaser crash results in wrongful death lawsuit

Severe weather sends many people in Louisiana inside, but tornadoes draw storm chasers onto the roads. Their storm videos have become popular with viewers, who watch shows like "Storm Wranglers" on The Weather Channel. The death of a livestreaming duo who produced content for the show has interrupted the excitement. Their fatal crash with a National Weather Service storm spotter has landed the network at the center of a wrongful death lawsuit.

The mother of the 25-year-old storm spotter wants $125 million in damages from The Weather Channel and the estates of the two deceased storm chasers. Her federal lawsuit claims that the television company had knowledge that the storm chasers were driving recklessly. The storm chasers' vehicle ran a stop sign and caused the accident that resulted in the deaths of all three men. A representative from The Weather Channel could not provide a statement about the litigation.

Court filings presented text messages from an unnamed party who also worked as a storm chaser and had contact with a producer on The Weather Channel's show. The message warned the producer about the other storm chaser's driving and stated that someone could get hurt. This warning occurred only weeks before the fatal accident.

The loss of a loved one can have financial as well as emotional consequences for survivors. A family member who has reason to believe that a third party's negligence led to a loved one's death might want to meet with an attorney to learn more about what types of compensation a successful wrongful death lawsuit might provide.
