What to do to avoid road rage

At some point, an individual may share a Louisiana highway with someone who is aggressive or driving in a dangerous manner. Those who are aggressive on the highways are said to be experiencing road rage. While an individual may use coping strategies to stay calm behind the wheel, he or she can't control what another person does. However, there are steps a person can take in an effort to defuse a potentially dangerous situation.

One way to avoid a conflict is to switch lanes if there is an open one available. If another lane isn't immediately available, use the turn signal to indicate that a lane change will occur as soon as possible. In the event that a driver is on a road with a single lane, it may be a good idea to pull over to the shoulder and let the other driver pass.

It is never a good idea to make eye contact or hand gestures to those who already seem agitated. It also isn't a good idea to honk the horn or flash the car's lights out of spite. To help calm down, put on some soothing music and grip the steering wheel as lightly as possible. Holding the steering wheel too tightly can lead to headaches and add to a driver's stress.

An aggressive driver may increase his or her risk of sustaining injuries in an accident or a road rage incident. That driver may also put passengers or other drivers at risk of getting hurt. Those who cause someone else to get hurt because of their negligence are generally liable for the damages a victim incurs. These damages could include medical bills, lost wages and lost future earnings. Additional compensation may be awarded to a victim by a jury or in a settlement.
