How external airbags can reduce crash injurys
External airbags are an emerging technology that many Louisiana residents may be interested to hear about. While some car part manufacturers are developing external airbags, it should be kept in mind that they are far from being perfected, much less being implemented on vehicles. Still, they may become a reality in the future.
The ZF Group is a manufacturer that is clear about the benefits of external airbags. Its data shows that the airbags can reduce the severity of accident injuries by as much as 40 percent. External airbags are meant to provide an additional crumple zone in the case of T-bones and other side collisions, absorbing some of the impact.
There are concerns about how the airbags can deploy a split second before the crash. Furthermore, some worry that the airbags could deploy unnecessarily if the predictive systems are faulty. Deploying airbags is, after all, more drastic than the tightening of a seatbelt or the adjustment of a car’s suspension. However, ZF states that these challenges can be overcome in ultrasonics.
ZF’s external airbag weighs about 13 pounds. Its dimensions will vary depending on vehicle size, but it is approximately 80 inches long, 21 inches high and 15 inches wide. Inflation time is 15 milliseconds, putting it at the same level as steering wheel airbags.
Ideally, of course, the airbags should never be put into use. Those who suffer car accident injuries at the hand of a speeding, distracted, drowsy or impaired driver may want to see a lawyer about filing a claim and being covered for medical expenses, vehicle damage and other losses. Personal injury lawyers have a network of professionals who can prove negligence.
