Motor vehicle accidents are a common cause of brain injuries in Louisiana. Researchers at the University of Maryland have found a link between traumatic brain injuries and changes in the colon that could lead to infection.
The researchers examined mice with brain injuries and discovered chronic intestinal changes which were also linked to increased risk of brain inflammation resulting in further damage. They found that after a brain injury, the colon became more permeable, making it easier for harmful bacteria to enter.
Researchers do not know what causes the change in the gut to occur. One hypothesis is that brain damage could cause changes in enteric glial cells (EGCs) in the gut. These cells are similar to astroglial cells which are found in the brain. Researchers believe it is possible that the EGCs are activated in order to compensate for damage to the brain.
The researchers also examined brain changes in mice they infected with a bacteria similar to E. coli. and found that brain inflammation worsened, causing tissue loss. This suggests that brain injuries trigger a two-way cycle of changes between the brain and the gut.
Brain injuries after a car accident can be devastating, resulting in lengthy recovery periods and permanent disability in some cases. Car accident victims who have been injured as a result of another driver’s negligence may be eligible for compensation for medical bills, costs of rehabilitation, lost earnings and pain and suffering. The victim’s family members may also be eligible for compensation if the accident has affected their lives as well–for example, if the person who suffered the injury was the family breadwinner but is no longer able to work.
A person who has been affected by a traumatic brain injury may benefit from consulting a personal injury lawyer. After a motor vehicle accident, liability insurance may be available to cover damages resulting from the accident. If the at-fault driver’s insurance is insufficient to cover the damages, it is possible that uninsured or underinsured motorist may be available.
