Many people in Louisiana suffer traumatic brain injuries. When the injury was received during a traumatic event, the person may also develop comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder through which they relive memories of the event over and over again.
In order to better understand the neural networks involved in both traumatic brain injuries and PTSD, researchers at the VA Boston Healthcare System studied the brains of 208 soldiers who were suffering from PTSD, some of whom also had co-occurring traumatic brain injuries. Those with the most severe PTSD showed networks with weaker connections in two locations.
Veterans who had co-occurring PTSD and TBIs showed weaker connections in a network involving the basal ganglia and the prefrontal cortex. These brain areas are involved in memory. The other network in which they showed connectivity problems involves the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus, an area responsible for contextualizing information. In addition to helping to better understand how the brain networks are affected by TBIs and PTSD, the research demonstrates that people who have both may have a more difficult time receiving effective treatment for their PTSD symptoms due to the impact of the TBI.
