Motorcyclist killed in highway accident

A 51-year-old motorcyclist was killed after he was involved in an accident with two passenger cars on Louisiana Highway 92 in Broussard. The fatal accident happened shortly before 11:20 a.m. and resulted in one of the car drivers being sent to jail. Toxicology results from the investigation are still pending, but police say they do not suspect intoxication was a factor.

Just prior to the crash, the victim had been stopped at the intersection of St. Etienne Road while he was waiting to turn left. A 30-year-old woman driving a 2011 Mazda CX9 hit the back of the man's motorcycle, and the man was ejected from his bike. After landing in the path of oncoming traffic, the motorcyclist was hit by a 73-year-old man driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene of the accident while the driver of the Mazda was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and the driver of the truck was uninjured. Later on, the Mazda driver was booked at Lafayette Parish Jail for outstanding warrants. She also received new charges for driving with a suspended license and careless operation.

The family of a motorcyclist who was killed in this kind of auto accident may choose to pursue a wrongful death action against the driver responsible for their loved one's death. Although the criminal case that might have resulted from the accident is separate from a family's civil claim, the family may use evidence from the criminal case to build their claim. An attorney may be able to help a family with this effort by gathering together all of the relevant pieces of evidence such as police reports, toxicology results and surveillance footage from the crash scene.
