Drunk driving crash statistics demonstrate problem's extent

Louisiana residents are seriously injured or killed in accidents caused by drunk drivers every year. The problem is of course not one just relegated to the state, but instead it is one with national reach. In 2012, 10,322 people were killed in accidents caused by intoxicated drivers across the country.

The problem is severe enough that, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a person dies in a drunk driving accident on an average of every 51 minutes in the U.S. That translates into nearly 30 deaths caused by drunk drivers each day. Sadly, 20 percent of the fatalities of children under the age of 14 in car accidents during 2012 were in accidents caused by the negligence of drunk drivers, and over half of those deaths were when the children were passengers in the vehicle with the impaired driver.

Around 1.4 million people in the U.S. were arrested for drunk driving in 2010 alone. While that number may seem high, what is even more startling is it represents a tiny fraction of the 112 million people who admitted to having driven drunk at least one time during that year.

People should not have to suffer because another motorist chooses to drive drunk. A person who is seriously injured in a car accident caused by an intoxicated driver may want to file a personal injury lawsuit against the responsible party. This can go forward even if the driver ends up not facing any criminal charges. Through a personal injury lawsuit, victims might recover the damages needed to compensate them for their losses incurred, which could include the costs of necessary medical treatment.
