Louisiana collision results in 3 deaths on New Year's Eve

According to authorities, three people died following a two-vehicle collision that occurred around 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 in Livingston Parish. The incident took place on LA Hwy 447, south of Interstate 12. State Police believe that the accident occurred as a 24-year-old male driver of a 2004 Mazda MZ6 was traveling northbound on the highway and crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic. The Mazda struck another car, a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer that was traveling southbound; the 38-year-old driver of that vehicle sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead following the collision. Three passengers were in the Mercury at the time of the crash, reportedly the wife and daughters of the 38-year-old man. His wife suffered serious injuries during the impact; she later died at Ochsner Hospital. One of his daughters, an 11-year-old, died in the collision. His 14-year-old daughter suffered moderate injuries and was hospitalized at OLOL.

State police are unsure whether impairment of the Mazda driver was a factor in the collision; they do not suspect that the driver of the Mercury was under any influence of drugs or alcohol. Investigators submitted toxicology samples from both drivers to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

In a case like this, the family members of the deceased individuals may turn to an attorney to discuss their options. Surviving family of car accident victims may be eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit in order to recover funeral costs and other compensation from the at-fault driver or the driver's estate.
