Unlicensed, undocumented immigrant driving a bus kills two people

In late August, an unlicensed bus driver caused a car collision that resulted in numerous serious injuries, some of which were fatal. Dozens of passengers on the bus were injured while on their way to help clean up the flood damage in Louisiana. Two other people in the vicinity were killed and others were injured.

The bus driver was an undocumented immigrant and did not have a license to drive the 2002 Eldorado National bus. A previous car accident scene was blocked off by a fire truck, a lit-up police car and a stopped Camry and Silverado. As the bus driver approached, he was speeding and lost control. He hit the fire truck first, then went across the right lane and slammed into the Camry. The Camry hit the Silverado in front of it and a flatbed trailer. The bus then hit and threw three firefighters off the 35-foot high guardrail and into the water below.

One of the firefighters thrown off the guardrail died at the hospital. The driver of the Camry sustained injuries and had to be airlifted to a hospital. A passenger in the backseat was killed, and two others were seriously injured. The five people in the Silverado were moderately injured. At least 24 passengers on the bus were taken to hospitals. The bus driver was charged with driving without a license, two counts of negligent homicide and reckless operation of a vehicle.

People who have been injured in motor vehicle accidents often face long recovery periods and high medical expenses. When the accident can be shown to have been caused by the negligence of another motorist, an attorney can often be of assistance in seeking compensation for an injured victim through a personal injury lawsuit filed against the at-fault driver.
