Louisiana man killed in head-on collision

A 22-year-old Louisiana man was killed and two others were injured in a head-on collision in Ponchatoula on Sept. 19. The accident occurred just before 5 a.m.

According to authorities, a 20-year-old man was driving a 2015 Toyota Scion west on Traino lane when he lost control of the car on a curve and crossed into the eastbound lane, slamming into a 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck. The victim, a Ponchatoula resident, was a passenger in the Toyota. Both drivers and the victim were transported to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, where the victim later died. The Toyota driver suffered serious injuries and was placed in the intensive care unit. The Chevrolet driver, a 44-year-old man from Madisonville, suffered moderate injuries and was listed in stable condition.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said blood samples were sent to the Louisiana State Police crime lab to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision. Charges are pending.

Families who lose a loved one in a fatal car accident caused by a negligent driver have the right to purse a wrongful death lawsuit in civil court. By using accident investigation reports, toxicology results and witness testimony, it may be possible to prove the at-fault driver is legally responsible for the victim's death. If the suit is successful, a victim's family could be awarded a financial settlement that covers medical expenses, funeral and burial costs, loss of income, loss of companionship and other related damages. A victim's family could learn more about their legal options by consulting with a personal injury attorney.
