Front crash prevention, autobrake reduce accidents

Drivers in Louisiana who have vehicles with forward collision warning systems and automatic braking are significantly less likely to be in an accident based on a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Forward collision warning systems reduced rear-end crashes by 23 percent while automatic braking brought them down about 40 percent.

It is estimated that with autobrakes in all vehicles, 700,000 fewer police-reported rear-end crashes would have happened in 2013. In 2015, the IIHS and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration came to an agreement with automakers that the autobrake would become standard equipment rather than the option that it currently is.

In addition to preventing crashes, autobrakes significantly reduce injury. With City Safety, the autobrake system used by Volvo, injuries went down 47 percent. In other cars equipped with forward collision warning and autobrake, there was a 42 percent reduction. The autobrake system tended to reduce speed even if it did not prevent an accident, and this was the reason for fewer injuries.

Safety technology such as these features as well as the continued development of self-driving cars promise increasingly safe roads in the future. However, there are still many accidents annually due to human error. People who have been seriously injured in an accident caused by a negligent driver may want to contact an attorney to discuss how they might best document their losses and what their next steps should be. The person might face medical expenses and lost income. In some cases, a person may even be permanently disabled following an accident and be unable to return to work at all, and the responsible driver's insurance company may make an offer that does not compensate the injured person's losses. An attorney may be able to get a better offer from an insurance company. It might be necessary to file a lawsuit, or a case may be settled out of court.
