Traumatic brain injuries

Traumatic brain injuries are one of the most dangerous injury types that a person in Lousiana may suffer. A TBI may result when a person receives a blow to the head or a penetration that disrupts the normal manner in which the brain functions.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, TBIs contribute to about 30 percent of all deaths caused by injuries. Across the U.S., 138 people die on a daily basis from injuries that include traumatic brain injuries. People who are able to survive a TBI may face a life of disability, including personality changes, problems with cognitive functioning and memory, balance problems and many other issues.

In 2010, more than 50,000 people died as a result that could at least be partially attributable to traumatic brain injuries. More than 280,000 people were diagnosed with having a TBI during that same year while they were hospitalized. Of these, 40 percent occurred when people fell and hit their head, with the elderly and children accounting for the two largest groups in which this occurred.

Auto accidents also are responsible for a large number of head injuries. A person who receives a traumatic brain injury in an accident that is caused by another party's negligence may want to consider filing a personal injury lawsuit. Through a lawsuit, the injured plaintiff may seek to recover damages to fairly compensate them for the losses that have been incurred. A personal injury lawyer can assist in reviewing the evidence of the incident to pinpoint responsibility and then using that as the basis of the lawsuit.
