Concussion treatment options for Louisiana patients

According to a neurosurgeon from the University of Pittsburgh, those who suffer a concussion should not be isolated during their recovery. He made the statement following a meeting of 37 scientists and others doing research into the issue, which was sponsored by the National Football League. Currently, doctors tend to seclude patients in the days and weeks after a concussion to allow the brain to recover and to avoid symptoms such as blurred vision and memory loss.

However, the new findings suggest that forcing patients to rest could actually prolong their recovery. Instead, they should be given medicine for headaches and eye exercises to help with vision after a blow to the head. Those who are active may also be at a lower risk for anxiety and depression in the aftermath of a concussion.

Researchers admit that they need more evidence before they can prove that their conclusions are the right ones. They also acknowledge that they need more time to work out specific treatment plans based on an individual's specific symptoms and how early a treatment can be administered. The group also said that it would publish a paper that outlines their findings from the event that was closed to the media.

Although concussions and other head injuries are often thought of in the context of contact sports such as football, they can be the result of other types of traumas, such as falls or motor vehicle accidents. A person who has suffered such an injury that was caused by the negligence of another party may want to seek compensation for the damages that have been incurred with the assistance of a personal injury attorney.
