Woman killed in drunk driving crash

On Dec. 16, a drunk driving crash on Louisiana Highway 2 resulted in the death of a woman from North Carolina. The deceased woman had been a passenger in a vehicle that was being driven by a 22-year-old woman.

According to troopers who responded to the scene of the car accident, a 43-year-old man was driving eastbound in a 2013 Ford F-150 when he drifted over the center line. The man's vehicle then collided with a 2011 Nissan driven by the 22-year-old woman. The driver of the Nissan was taken to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries, and her passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Both occupants of the Nissan were wearing seat belts.

A female minor who was a passenger in the Ford was also a victim of the crash. Although she was restrained in a booster seat, the girl suffered from serious injuries that required hospital treatment. Reports indicate that the driver of the Ford was impaired when the collision occurred. He was detained and booked into West Carroll Parish Jail on charges of vehicular homicide, negligent injury and driving left of center.

The family of someone who has been killed by a drunk driver has the right to file a civil claim for compensation. A wrongful death claim is separate from criminal proceedings, though public evidence that is used at the criminal trial may be used to support the wrongful death claim. Many families in this situation decide to enlist the help of an attorney while pursuing a claim for compensation.
